Lessons are one to one only (except in cases of minors) and covid guidelines must be adhered to wherever possible.
During your time with me you will learn:
• Parts of the harness
• Their role in pulling, stopping and turning the carriage.
• Learn how to yoke up (put to) the carriage and make sure the harness is as should be.
• Learn how to hold your reins as it is a different feeling to riding.
• Learn how to start and stop the carriage and to navigate bends and turns.
Lessons take place on quiet country roads for the most part then on into the very start of Newbridge. Giving you the chance to drive on busier streets. Then turning around and heading back towards the yard.
Lessons generally will take about 1hr30mins and cost 50€
Hand sanitiser is available on the side of the carriage and masks are mandatory.
Chico used to work in Dublin City and is classed as bombproof (meaning he doesn't frighten very easily) but none the less horses are flight animals and there is always something that can spook them.
As with all sports there is a risk of serious injury or death. All students participate at their own risk.
You will meet your horse, Chico and become acquainted. You must be aware that due to a bad start in life Chico can be nippy at times. I cannot be held responsible for the risk run in getting bitten by him or any other horse in the yard.
You will then harness him up and learn how to adjust the harness to fit him and fit the carriage. Then bring Chico to the carriage and yoke up (put to the carriage). You will do a safety check to make sure everything is as it should be.
Then we will set off, I will drive the majority of the way out to make sure there are no problems and when we turn around you will drive back learning how to hold the reins and drive into the sunset.
Appropriate clothing should be worn at all times as you will be outdoors in the unpredictable Irish weather.
People of all ages can learn to drive a carriage. But if there is a case where I have a minor learning I would ask that one parent be present with me at all times, of course both parents are more than welcome, but I will not accommodate a whole family with extra children as concentration is needed.
I reserve the right to cancel or postpone lessons in the interest of health and safety for my horse.
